Long Term Care Services

Many people think long term care means only going to a nursing home, however, this is not true. These days, there are a variety of services that exist that may ultimately keep someone in need out of a nursing or extended care home entirely; helping to allow them to remain are home or live as independentaly as possible for as long as possible. Of course, if there is a need for furthe extended care, other options such as assisted living facilities or nursing homes exist as well.

Home Health Care Services

It's no surprise that most people prefer the comfort of their own homes to that of a outside facility. Afterall, our homes are not just where we rest our heads at night; they are a place where families have grown and memories have been made. We often feel most comfortable in our own homes as we are most familiar with those surroundings and feel a level of privacy and security. However, when assistance is needed with with everyday activities, a variety of options are available.

Many times, the first soure of long term care services is that of other family members. When a loved one needs help, the family generally will step in to assist with household and personal tasks. Unfortunately, sometimes this is not readily available or even possible. This is where homemaker and companion services typically come in: help may include household chores, transportation and other daily activities. Home health aides may provide personal care services, household tasks and even help with medications. Visiting nurses may evaluate home safety, monitor medical conditions, oversee medications and provide other skilled health care services.

Assisted Living Services

An unfortunate realization...sometimes those is need of care may no longer comfortable or able to live in their own homes. However, such individuals may not require round-the-clock nursing care and therefore may choose to live independently in a setting that provides a strong support system. Residents of assisted living facilities typically live in their own apartments while enjoying services like meals, recreational activities and transportation along with long term care services. Many times, assisted living facilities also have medical staff on hand in the instance that a medical emergency arises. The types and sizes of these facilities vary as they can range from a small home to a large apartment-style complex. Likewise, exact services may differ from facility to facility, so it is always best to do your research before allowing a loved to be placed there.

Nursing Homes

Depending upon the severity of medical ailments, some people may need 24-Hour care. Such individuals can receive long term care services in a nursing home. Many nursing homes offer programs that address the well being of its residents. These may include gardens, pets, cultural and social activities, as well as nutritional programs. Some facilities are even designed to meet the special needs of residents with Alzheimer's disease as well.
